6 Cool bars to check out in 2016

The right bar can make or break a night out. We have all suffered the awkwardness of drinking low quality beverages in less than savoury surroundings because poor planning left you with nowhere else to go. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen again!

We know a thing or two about what is cool and what is not. With that in mind, we compiled a cool list of some bars you need to visit during 2016 if you find yourself in that part of the world.

Danger of Death, London

This hidden treat is one of the best of the speakeasy style bars popping up in unusual locations all over London. We love this kind of place which adds a bit of adventure and excitement to the tedious familiarity of a night out in all the usual bars. Previously a private members club, Danger of Death is now open to everyone but we recommend booking ahead as there are limited tables.

It can be tricky to find; to the untrained eye it looks like a plain old antique shop from outside. However, if you venture downstairs and push through a few ‘light switches’ you will soon find yourself in this swanky but understated bar. It’s well worth the search.

Cake Shop, New York

Cake Shop is a bar and venue in the Lower East Side of Manhattan with a unique personality. What makes it so cool? Well it is part bar, part music venue, part record shop, and part bakery!

You can have a few drinks, catch a live band downstairs, and then enjoy a homemade cupcake. The bar caters mainly to a rock crowd, and hosts plenty of the coolest new rock and punk bands on the NYC circuit. This is one place which definitely captures the free spirit of blu!

Point éphémère, Paris

Euro 2016 will bring many visitors to France this summer; if you are lucky enough to be catching the action first hand you will want to know the best places to stop for a drink.

In Paris we recommend the trendy Point éphémère. This riverside bar and event space is housed in a former warehouse on the bank of the Canal Saint-Martin – making it an ideal outdoor spot for summer. There is always something going on in this modern space: it has a cool vibe with the graffiti and bare concrete walls and you can often find art exhibits, live concerts, and club nights taking place.

Drinks at the bar

La Caravella, Marseille

Not all of the Euro 2016 action will be taking place in the capital; elsewhere we suggest visiting the casual but chic La Caravelle in Marseille. This bar has been open since the 1920s and it is easy to see why it has lasted so well, with an understated class which is welcoming to everyone.

This bar provides a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere, and regular jazz concerts to add to the idyllic French vibe which the venue showcases perfectly. The bar sits next to the Vieux port and the balcony offers stunning views towards Notre Dame de la Garde.

Caverna, Rio de Janeiro

This year the Olympic Games are going to Rio, so we need to include a choice from this amazing city. We recommend paying a visit to excellent Caverna bar which is tucked neatly away down a side-street in the trendy Botafogo area.

We love Caverna because the rock & roll spirit pervades the atmosphere of this fun bar. They blast loud music most of the time, making it more of a party spot than somewhere for a quiet chat. The food is also well regarded in the area, and is one of the most popular local spots for a burger; they even introduce a new burger to try every month.

Open Baladin, Rome

This haven of craft beer is a big favourite with locals and tourists alike, thanks to its central location and stunning range of beers. There are as many as 40 beers available on draught, and even more bottles to choose from. This includes many beers from their own brewery, a variety of Italian artisan brews and a range of international imports. You will certainly be spoiled for choice!

They also do a fine line in food. What could be a more perfect companion to a beer than a burger – and they do some of the best in Rome, as well as a range of vegetarian and vegan options. While it might be central, the bar is hidden down a little side street off the Campo De Flori square; meaning it rarely gets too busy.
