Five craft beer names that will make you ask why

If you’re anything like us you’ll be lapping up this summer weather, rolling out the barbecue as soon as the clouds disappear and enjoying the sun with your favourite vaping brand (hi there!).

Chances are you’ll enjoy a few beers this summer, too. Like vaping, the popularity of craft beer has skyrocketed in recent years, helping result in 1,000 new breweries between 2013 and 2017.

Vaping and beer go hand in hand. But as any craft beer lover knows, there are huge variations in quality and style. And there is great variety in the choice of names that breweries give to their beers. If you want to call your IPA ‘Yellow Snow’ there’s nothing to stop you (no, really, somebody did).

Here at blu we don’t judge – we’re all about freedom and personal choice. But you do have to admit that some craft beer names are just downright bizarre. We’ve compiled some of our favourites specially for your enjoyment.

The Great Big Kentucky Sausage Fest

What a place to start. This hoppy imperial brown ale was first brewed in partnership between Denmark’s Amager Brewery and Kentucky’s Against The Grain.

When the two companies came together to make a beer, their brewing session turned into one fiercely competitive hot dog eating competition (as you do) and the name was born. Still, this is one quirky title for a beer.

Purple Monkey Dishwasher

Another one straight out of the randomness hall of fame, Purple Monkey Dishwasher is an American porter from Evil Genius Beer. Fans of the Simpsons might recognise the expression, which is basically the result of information getting mixed up when it’s whispered from one person to the next. But if you didn’t know that, then this name is almightily confusing.

Bizarre enough for honourable mentions are Dead Elephant Ale, Pet Rock and Moon Boot IPA, as well as Ill-Tempered Gnome.

Hoppyright Infringement

The more craft beers are launched, the more competitive the market becomes. Brewers are rarely shy of calling out other beer makers for stealing their best ideas. Hoppyright Infringement is a neat reference to this from a Louisiana-based brewer called NOLA. They could have also gone with ‘intellectual hopperty’, just saying.

NOLA are tapping in to a growing trend for hoppy beers – as well as very hoppy names. Smooth Hoperator is another good one, and there’s also excellent efforts from the likes of Hoptimus Prime and Drop It Like It’s Hop.

He Ain’t Heffe…

Craft beer has been mainstream for a couple of years now so breweries are increasingly experimenting with lesser-known styles. Among them is the hefeweizen style of wheat beer, which originates from Germany. Introducing He Ain’t Heffe – a hefeweizen brewed in the States that references the cult pop hit He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother.

As for other musical beer names, we quite like Whitney Brewston – and for fans of classic cinema, there’s also Audrey Hopburn IPA.

Random Name Generator

It’s not easy coming up with a killer name for your new beer, apparently. That’s why we quite like the simplicity of this seasonal beer from Tiny Rebel Brewing. The company is based in South Wales and has made a few beers with unusual names: pint of Free Willy, anyone?

They also have several beers in their regular range that pay tribute to their Welsh heritage, including a Welsh red ale called Cwtch and a tropical IPA named Clwb Tropicana. Pretty tame by this list’s standards.

Names are one thing but, just like craft beer, full-on flavour is really where it’s at. To explore our range of Intense liquidpods for the myblu® device – ideal for existing vapers who love uncompromising flavour – visit our web store.
