What is a vaping device?

The modern vape device was born in 2003, when Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik patented a design for an electronic device that heated flavoured liquid to create vapour. The invention delivered nicotine without the need to burn tobacco, and soon found favour in China when it hit the market in 2004. Worldwide rollout followed shortly after.

In the years since, vape devices have grown in popularity, with estimates last year suggesting that global sales of vaping devices will exceed $15bn by 2019. But with this success questions have come from consumers eager to learn more. Here, we answer some of the most common.

What is a vaping device?

A vaping device, which are sometimes called an e-cigarette, e-cig, vape device or vape, is an electronic device that heats a liquid containing flavouring and nicotine, amongst other ingredients, which creates vapour. The vapour is then inhaled by the vaper, to achieve the nicotine hit.

What are the different types of vaping device?

There isn’t one kind of vaping device; instead they come in a number of forms and models. Some require e-liquid to be refilled (these are called Open System vape devices). Others require cartridges or pods (these are called Closed System vape devices; our myblu Kit is an example of this)

More advanced vape devices are also available. These are called Box Mods, Mods, or APV's. They often feature modifications to their battery power or the size of the cartridge, appropriate to the vaper’s personal taste.

What parts make up a vape device?

Depending on what model vape device you use, the parts can differ a lot. Most use a battery, a heating mechanic, storage for the e-liquid and a mouthpiece. Open System vape devices may feature bigger batteries and heating elements than Closed System ones. A Closed System will always use a cartridge that contains the e-liquid.
